A week later than scheduled, the Golden North Salmon Derby has begun as of Friday morning.

The 73rd Annual Golden North Salmon Derby is now underway, entering its second day as of Saturday morning. The big story this year is the return of the king salmon to the competition. The top ten and beyond reflect this change with larger, twenty-plus pound salmons dominating the coho numbers. For reference, 2018 winner James McKnight's 17.7-pound coho would not qualify for the top 5 this year. 

Featuring over 73 prizes, available over the entirety of the weekend, the Golden North Salmon Derby is one of the premier and long-standing fishing tournaments in the Pacific Northwest. Started in 1947, the derby has become a Juneau institution each summer. Over its history, the derby and the Territorial Sportsmen have given over 305 scholarships to deserving high school students, totaling more than 1.7 million dollars. 

For the first time in many decades, this year's edition of the derby had to be moved a week later, due to dangerous marine weather conditions.
