Alaska jet struck by lightning Sunday descending into Sitka

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - An Alaska Airlines jet was struck by lightning in Southeast Alaska Sunday night.

It was Flight 70 from Juneau to Sitka and the airlines' Tim Thompson tells us the strike occurred while it was descending into Sitka.

Thompson said there were some reports of a flash coming off of a wing by passengers.  He said typically what that is the static discharge wicks that are on the aircraft.  He said aircraft are designed to withstand lightning strikes.

The plane landed safely and was taken out of service.  Thompson said it was later ferried to Seattle for an inspection.
