Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - A proposed bond package for voter approval and grants funded by CARES Act dollars was approved during the Assembly's regular meeting Monday evening.
The bond ordinance calls for an amount not to exceed $15 million to fix school roofs, repairs and capital improvements to parks, repairs to streets and buildings, and energy efficiency projects.
Voters need to approve the plan at the regular municipal election to be held on Oct. 6, 2020.
Up to $8.5 million in CARES Act funding for phases one and two of the Business Sustainability Grant program was approved, as was a separate ordinance earmarking up to $3 million in CARES Act funding for the Nonprofit Sustainability Grant Program.
An ordinance appropriating up to one-half million for Airlift Northwest was also approved.
Airlift Northwest is not eligible for most of the CARES Act funds available to for-profit businesses and traditional non-profits. The PC 12 aircraft it owns can land on shorter runways which makes it better to serve many smaller communities in Southeast Alaska.
An ordinance establishing a systemic racism review committee was also introduced.
