Haines, Alaska (KINY) - The fire index danger rating is very high and all open burns for the entire Haines Borough will be prohibited until further notice, Fire Chief Al Giddings announced.

The ban includes burn barrels and rubbish piles regardless of their size or location.

Designated BBQ's, small campfire rings and cooking fires will be exempt from the ban.

The public is asked to have a bucket of water or source of suppression handy just in case.

The community fireworks show is scheduled for Saturday night.  The permitted areas are the beach areas of Picture POint and the Port Chilkoot Dock.

All citizens are asked to refrain from igniting fireworks outside of these areas.

Skagway also imposed a burn ban prohibiting open burns anyplace outside of the fire hydrant protected area.

Open burning within the fire hydrant area is limited to approved burn barrels and campfire rings.
