Fairbanks Police Department evacuated Moore Street for possible explosive device, investigation now complete

Fairbanks, Alaska (KINY) - On Thursday, May 25, at approximately 8:07 a.m., Fairbanks Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call from an employee at the Sobering Center on Moore Street in Fairbanks.

The employee reported that they had found what appeared to be a bomb in a client’s backpack.

They stated that the device had sticks that had “dynamite” written on them and there were timers attached to it.

A picture was provided to Fairbanks Police Department.

To ensure the safety of nearby residents, FPD put out a Fairbanks Safety Alert asking residents to evacuate the area, and the Fort Wainwright Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Company was called to the scene.

In addition to multiple alerts that went out via text, phone calls, email, and social media, FECC made significant efforts to reach businesses and residents in the area to inform them of the situation.

At approximately 10:40 a.m., Ft. Wainwright EOD determined that the device was not a real explosive.

Residents were then advised they could return to the area.

It was determined that the Sobering Center client who had the device in his backpack did not make any verbal threats regarding the device and was asleep when the call was made to FECC.
