Fireworks use, changing form of government top Hoonah City Council agenda

Hoonah, Alaska (KINY) - The Hoonah City Council will hold a regular meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Topping the agenda is a public hearing regarding an ordinance that would allow for a resolution each year to set the dates and times that fireworks can be possessed and used.

Following the public hearing, that ordinance will come before the council for a final reading and vote.

An ordinance will also be introduced in first reading that would send a question to voters in the Oct. 4 city election, asking them whether or not to adopt a managerial form of government.

Hoonah currently has a strong-mayor form of government, with Mayor Gerald Byers presiding over city business.

Another ordinance to be discussed in first reading would authorize Municipal Clerk Jennifer Bidiman to establish rules and procedures for vote-by-mail municipal elections.

The council will also take up a first reading of an ordinance directing that Hoonah City Council and Committee as a Whole meeting agenda notices would be posted in three public places, with ZOOM teleconference information, and on the city's social media platform.

Under new business, the council will look to allocate $35,000 for bear-proof dumpsters, $150,000 for water plant improvements, $35,000 to complete a water main leak detection study, $324,000 for additional work on Cannery Road and Hill Street, and $68,000 for the replacement of Garteeni Creek Bridge.

A TV/film production permit will also be discussed.
