Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau Port Director Carl Uchityl reported cruise traffic numbers so far for the cruise season while a guest on Action Line.

According to Uchityl, ending June 7, Juneau has had about 193,000 guests in, against a capacity of about 300,000.

"So we're at about right at 64% capacity of what the cruise lines are bringing to Juneau, so we expect those numbers to grow as the season wears on," he said. "We know that the early sailings were kind of limited by kind of the media concerns that people had early on and making bookings, but it appears that the vessels are sailing with more and more percent capacity as the summer wears on."

Uchityl estimated that the city is looking at 1 to 1.2 million passengers this year.

The city receives $13 per passenger that comes to Juneau as part of the head tax.

"Just kind of anecdotally and man on the street. When I talk to retail folks and charter operators and the folks selling tours along the waterfront, people seem very optimistic, and they seem to be very happy with sales thus far."
