Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Flood waters are starting to collect near the Mendenhall Glacier after the National Weather Service expected the annual outburst sometime Friday.
Water is coming up now and the U.S. Forest Service is blocking off the road to the Mendenhall Glacier Campground.
According to CCFR Chief Rich Etheridge, the path in front of Skaters Cabin and the road just before the cabin, by the campground, is becoming inundated.
Residents who live in the vicinity of the glacier and along the Mendenhall River are being asked to be ready to move.
The National Weather Service expects the river to crest at about 10.2 feet.
At 9 feet the water would cover Skaters Cabin Road and flow into the Mendenhall Campground.
At 9.4 feet there would be minor flood along View Drive.
At 10 feet the campground would be underwater in certain areas.
