Haines assembly certifies election, swears in new members

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The results of the 2021 municipal election for Haines was certified during the regular assembly meeting Tuesday, with two new assembly members and two new school board members being elected.

    Tyler Huling was elected to the Haines assembly with 605 votes, and Debra Schnabel was also elected with 594 votes.

    Brenda Josephson received 426 votes, Richard Clement got 362 votes.

    For the two school board seats, Brian Clay and Michael Wald were elected to the two open three-year seats. Clay received 748 votes, and Wald got 642 votes.

    For the two two-year seats, Kevin Cheb and Shannon Dryden were elected. Cheb was elected with 453 votes, Dryden got 440 votes.

    The other two candidates in the running, Keely Baumgartner, and Jonathan Ray, got 332 and 240 votes respectively.

    Alekka Fullerton, Haines Borough Clerk, said there was similar voter turnout between the two precincts.

    Precinct number one, which encompasses the former corporate limits of the city of Haines and the Chilkat Peninsula, was at a 44% total turnout. Precinct two, encompassing the area of the Haines Borough to the north and west of the Haines, had a 42% voter turnout.

    She said that 37% of Haines in-town voters voted early, while 26% of those out the road voted early.

    62% of out the road voters voted on election day, whereas about half the in town voters voted on election day.

    Total voter turnout this year was 44%. In 2019, turnout was at 51%.

    Outgoing Assembly member, Carol Tuynman, said It has been a tremendous privilege to serve, saying that she has learned so much.
