Hoonah City Council approves election results

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Hoonah City Council certified the results of the 2021 election this week.

Shawn McConnel and Brian Lackey were elected to the two open seats on the City Council. The term is for three years. McConnell received 170 votes and Lackey received 159.

Duane Jack Sr. ran uncontested and won the other open City Council seat. He received 219 votes, the term for the seat is set at two years.

For the school board, Jamie Erickson wins the three-year seat after netting 141 votes. Heidi Jewell got 90 votes.

For the two-year seat on the school board, there was one certified candidate, but there was a turnout for two write-ins. Harold Houston Sr. was elected with 142 votes. Write-in candidates Brittney Tyler and Geradine Cheslock received 49 and 12 votes respectively.

For the Liquor board, Nadine Morrison got 188 votes.

Jennifer Bidiman, Hoonah City Clerk, said 707 ballots were sent through the mail, and 250 ballots were tallied. She said there were discussions on trying to get people the city knows that are not in Hoonah, or know are deceased, off the register."It's a little more complicated than what we can handle here. There's a big process."

Bidiman said there were two spoiled ballots and six ballots that were lost in the mail, but she said the printing company was so efficient that they made sure Hoonah had extras so that they could negate the one lost ballot and issue a new ballot. There were no questioned ballots or absentee ballots.

"It only took three and a half hours to count ballots, it was very quick," she said.
