
Sitka, Alaska (KINY) - The Greater Sitka Chamber of Commerce Venetian Masquerade was sold out Saturday.
Petro Marine Services won the Business of the Year Award. They have invested heavily in Sitka's docks and organize the 4th of July fireworks show. They are also one of the Chamber's reliable and primary benefactors.
Alaska Seaplanes won the New Business of the Year Award. They have taken on an important role in Sitka's transportation network with reduced and limited ferry service.
Bob and Betty Allen won the Cossack Cap Award. They are the owners of Allen Marine and Alaskan Dream Cruises. They won the Business of the Year Awards in 1996 and 2012. They are also members of the Visitor Industry Hall of Fame. The award honors those who have distinguished themselves in unselfish and extraordinary public service in Sitka. The Allen's opened the shipyard in 1968 and began repairing fishing boats. In 1970 they offered their first tours in Silver Bay. Over the years they've provided hundreds of job opportunities.
The Community Heroes Award went to the Sitka Sound Science Center. They annually host WhaleFest for students and scientists from around the world. They also help to raise awareness for our ecosystems and bring cutting-edge research to Sitka. They also offer year-round training, internships, and workshops and work closely with Sitka area schools.
