    Crimson Bears Softball, Baseball Teams Get Friday Wins

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Juneau-Douglas High School Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears softball and baseball teams earned wins in the rain on Friday night. The softball girls toppled Thunder Mountain and the baseball boys stopped Petersburg.

      The Crimson Bears softball team earned a 15-0 three-inning win over cross-town rival Thunder Mountain at Melvin Park Field.

      JDHS sophomore Mariah Schauwecker got the win on the mound, striking out three Falcons batters and walking one.

    Schauwecker also helped her own cause by going 2-2 at the plate with three RBI and scoring two runs. Classmates Anna Dale and Gloria Bixby had two hits apiece. Dale had two RBI. Bixby, junior Kaia Smith and senior Mackenzie Jackson had one RBI each. Sophomore Saelyr Hunt, Smith and Jackson had one hit each.

      TMHS senior Mariah Tanuvasa-Tuvaifale and freshman Ashlyn Gates had the lone hits for the Falcons.

      The Crimson Bears and Falcons play again at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday at Melvin Park Field.

      On the hard ball diamond Juneau-Douglas senior Garrett Bryant went five innings, struck out 15 batters and walked just one as JDHS overpowered visiting Petersburg. Junior Kai Schmidt closed and struck out four.

      Just two batters had the privilege to touch base against Bryant. The Vikings' Isaac Vinson reached on an error in the top of the second inning with two outs and Bryant walked the Vikings' Max Marohl to start the top of the third.

      “Garrett pitched really well tonight,” Juneau-Douglas coach Chad Bentz said. “He attacked the strike zone and got after their hitters right off the get go and he didn’t let up. He as fun to watch.”

      Bryant also collected three RBI at the plate and scored a run and Schmidt had two RBI.

      Seniors Brock McCormick and Christian Ludeman had two hits apiece. McCormick and junior Gavin Millard scored two runs. McCormick had an RBI. Senior Ben Coutu, and sophomores Porter Nelson and Cayden Message scored one run each.

      The Crimson Bears and Vikings play again on Saturday at 4 p.m and 7 p.m. at Adair Kennedy Field.

      Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Thunder Mountain Falcons baseball team split a conference series with the visiting Sitka Wolves on Saturday at Adair Kennedy Field, winning the opener 9-8 and falling in the night cap 14-1. The Falcons also lost a non-conference game on Friday 6-4 to the Wolves.

      Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Thunder Mountain High School softball team won its second run-shortened game in three days against Sitka on Saturday at Dimond Park Fields, completing a two-game sweep of the visiting Wolves. The Falcons earned a 9-1 five-inning win Saturday after beating the Wolves 10-0 on Thursday.

    • Crimson Bears Softball Girls Take Last At Bats

      Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Crimson Bears softball seniors will take the last swings from their home plate tonight at 7:30 p.m. on Melvin Park Field, a year too late for those who lost last season to the coronavirus shutdown, and way too early for the current crop of players that still have to deal with the pandemics lingering effects.

    • Sitka Tribe CARES Act Housing & Temporary Shelter Assistance

      The Sitka Tribe of Alaska is pleased to offer Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act need based assistance for Tribal Citizen/ AK Native or American Indian Sitka community households impacted by the COVID pandemic. The assistance available is $500 per household paid directly to a vendor to cover the mortgage, rent, utilities, heating fuel, or boat moorage costs, invoice verification is required and must be submitted with the application. This funding will also assist with those experiencing homelessness with temporary shelter. There is a separate application for this type of assistance.
